Łasków is a small village in the Lublin region, in Hrubieszów County, right by the border with Ukraine. On 10 March 1944, Ukrainian civilians—women, children, men—were killed here. Now, after more than a year of waiting for approval, a Ukrainian team has begun searching for their graves.

The start of the work was announced on 6 October by Oleksandr Alfiorov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance. According to his statement, the victims died in an attack by units of the Home Army and the Peasants’ Battalions. The work is secured by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINR), and is being carried out by “Dola”—a municipal enterprise of the Lviv Regional Council, which searches for the graves of participants in national liberation struggles and victims of wars, deportations, and political repression.
Why is this important right now?

This is only the second search effort by the Ukrainian side in Poland after a long break. The first took place in autumn 2025 in Jureczkowa in the Subcarpathian region.
The permit for work in Łasków was issued on 31 August 2026 by the head of the Zamość branch of the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Lublin. At the same time, Polish specialists are carrying out work in Ukraine – in summer, among other places, in Ostrówki and Wola Ostrowiecka in Volhynia and at the cemetery in Hołosko in Lviv.
Łasków lies about 10 km from the border with Ukraine. Before the war, Ukrainians were the main inhabitants here. Until now, no one had ever searched for the graves of the residents killed in 1944.
Alfiorov calls the start of the work an important signal:
This is proof that the process has been unblocked also on the Polish side, and that dialogue and cooperation on issues of dignified commemoration are gradually being rebuilt (trans. ed.).
The dead did not choose which side of the border they would come to rest on. For the living, one thing remains – to find them and restore their names.
